GRAYSON PUTS EFFICIENCY AND COST SAVING CENTRE STAGE

- Stand No: 1177, 2011 International Public Transportation EXPO

Grayson Corp.’s debut appearance at APTA’s 2011 International Public Transportation EXPO is the first time the company, which was incorporated in 2008, will have attended a US trade show.

It is the American operation of Grayson Thermal Systems, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of heat exchange products for the transportation sector, and is making waves in the low to medium volume market with a growing portfolio of products designed to save vehicle operators time and money, and reduce their carbon emissions.

Grayson Corp general manager Dave Wright says that the company has focused much of its recent research and development work on devising products to help operators struggling with eye-wateringly high fuel prices in the UK, and the approach is increasingly paying off in the US as prices here also climb fast.

Dave said: “With the longer distances that American vehicles have to cover, and the greater extremes of temperature they have to contend with, Grayson can help operators to make major savings.

“And as environmental legislation becomes stricter, I believe our systems will increasingly come into their own.”

There are already more than 1,000 vehicles on North American roads that are fitted with Grayson cooling systems, and Grayson Corp. is currently working with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) on a trial that will ultimately help WMATA to save money and optimise performance across its bus fleet.

A Grayson Cassette 2 Plus cooling module has been installed during the mid-life refurbishment of a 2004 Orion VII, where it is being re-powered from a John Deere engine to a Cummins CNG Natural Gas engine.

The project is part of a programme to refurbish 240 vehicles. Grayson’s cooler is designed to minimise downtime for servicing and it is also significantly lighter than the OEM and aftermarket products available from North American radiator manufacturers.

In the depots the all-aluminum radiator and charge air cooler will increase reliability and, if required, can be removed, cleaned and refitted in less than two hours, whilst the radiator frame, fan cowl and drive system remain in the vehicle.

The dimpled fin design resists clogging by road dirt, maintaining high cooling performance and low fuel consumption.

Grayson has been carrying out a three month, in service and durability test at the height of the Washington summer, when the temperature in DC has been consistently close to 100 degrees. Dave is confident that the trial will prove the superior performance of the Cassette 2 cooler in these high ambient temperatures.

This is the product that Grayson Corp will be showing at this year’s EXPO, but the company has a range of others that can help operators to get the most from their vehicles while minimising their outlay.

Dave said: “So far we have only scratched the surface, there is so much more that we can offer to the US market.

“The key players in the North American bus and coach industry, and the specialist vehicle sector, are huge businesses. As a result, most component and systems suppliers are geared to meeting the needs of these few companies.

“Support to second tier bus and coach manufacturers is much less well-developed. Our approach is targeted at bringing a high level of service to these businesses. We work in partnership with vehicle manufacturers and operators to develop the products they need and to create bespoke systems for them where necessary. This is a high-end level of service that we believe we can offer while still providing good value for money.”
