GRAYSON SERVICE CONTRACTS HELP HOLIDAYMAKERS KEEP THEIR COOL | DEC 2008

Air conditioning system downtime on Thermo King-equipped vehicles at coach holiday company Shearings Holidays is at an all-time low, following the implementation of an annual contract maintenance programme by Grayson Thermal Systems.
Grayson, which is Thermo King’s UK distributor of air conditioning systems to the bus and coach industry, has installed Thermo King CRT 2 1000 air conditioning units in 100 coaches for the holiday company since 2002, and now manages the maintenance of the units fitted to designated European and UK vehicles during the winter months.
Ian Hateley, Grayson’s HVAC director, said that the success of the programme is due in part to his company’s policy of pre-emptively replacing certain key components during routine servicing, where it is known that these have a finite lifespan.
He said: “During scheduled servicing we replace parts such as belts and bearings before they reach the end of their expected working life, and this has helped us to optimise the reliability of the systems.
“As a result, we had just two air conditioning breakdown calls during 2008, from a fleet of vehicles which each travel around 80,000 km per year – a total of eight million km.
“Vehicles are a vital resource to a holiday business, and the costs associated with a touring coach being off the road far outweigh the cost of scheduled preventive maintenance.”
Michael Forbes, engineering director at Shearings Holidays, said: “Grayson’s servicing programme has worked extremely well for the company, helping us to keep our vehicles on the road, and on schedule.
“The 2008 air conditioning servicing programme has just got under way, ready for our 2009 holiday season.”
Grayson Thermal Systems’ contract maintenance package for Shearings currently includes all parts, labour and replacement vehicle costs after 24 hours for all vehicles operating on European routes.
Service appointments are scheduled by Grayson’s service centre team in tandem with the vehicles’ MOT testing programme, and carried out by Grayson engineers on-site at Shearings’ premises in the West Midlands, Cheshire and West Yorkshire.
