GRAYSON INVESTS £4m TO MEET AMBITIOUS DEVELOPMENT PLANS | July 2009
Grayson Thermal Systems is investing £4m in new premises and equipment as the latest phase in a business growth programme that will see it developing new products and opening up new markets in Europe and the US.
The Birmingham-based company is a leading specialist in the design and manufacture of heat exchange technology, producing cooling, heating and air conditioning products for the bus and coach market, and for specialist off-highway vehicles and diesel-powered engine industries worldwide.
Grayson has taken on a 10 year lease on a xxxx sq ft facility that will house the company’s new head office and an enlarged aluminium manufacturing facility.
It has also purchased a wide range of new equipment and associated infrastructure, including a new furnace that will boost aluminium production by 400 per cent.
Grayson managing director Stuart Hateley said: “We took the decision to expand late in 2007, and developed a strategy that would help us to achieve our goals.
“Obviously the economic climate has deteriorated since then but we are forging ahead because we believe that our plans will put us in a strong position to take advantage of future opportunities.
“Over the last two years we have done a lot of work on developing export business in Europe, and we have opened a business in North America which is making good headway.
“We are redoubling our focus on export markets during 2009 as the pound’s weakness against the dollar and the euro enhances our value-for-money proposition.”
The new manufacturing facility will replace the company’s existing factory in Wharfdale Road, Tyseley, Birmingham. Grayson will continue to manufacture its range of copper-brass products at its dedicated copper-brass unit in Tyseley, and it will also retain its service centre near Birmingham Airport.
Grayson introduced all-aluminium charge air coolers into its range in 2003, followed by a range of fully-welded, all-aluminium radiators at the start of 2008, following intensive development work and product trials.
Since then, orders have exceeded forecasts by (xx per cent – to be confirmed), as a result of the superior thermal performance and enhanced durability of the products. They also offer cost benefits and a contribution to customers’ environmental programmes – being 100 per cent recyclable at the end of their working life.
Grayson was set up in Birmingham in 1978 by chairman Graham Hateley, as an engineering business supplying parts to the automotive aftermarket. Today the company serves the bus and coach and specialist off-highway vehicle industries and has three divisions, two manufacturing sites in Birmingham and distribution centres in Birmingham, Bathgate, Basingstoke, Newcastle and Oldham.
It has a turnover in the UK of £20m and 160 employees.
