GRAYSON THERMAL SYSTEMS LAUNCHES INTO THE US MARKET | NOV 2008

Tyseley-based engineering business Grayson Thermal Systems, which designs and manufactures cooling, heating and air conditioning products for buses and coaches, specialist off-highway vehicles and refuse collection vehicles, has launched a new venture in the US.
Grayson Thermal Systems Corporation has commenced operations from its base in Orlando, Florida, offering the company’s own existing range of products to small to medium sized vehicle manufacturers, as well as its design expertise to help the manufacturers achieve optimal heating and cooling systems at an early stage in their vehicle development programmes.
Grayson Thermal Systems managing director Stuart Hateley said the company’s analysis shows that American vehicle makers do not have access in their home market to the levels of design and manufacturing support and after sales service that Grayson offers in the UK and parts of Europe.
He said: “The key players in the American bus and coach industry, and the specialist vehicle sector, are huge. Most component and systems suppliers are therefore geared to meeting the needs of these few companies, but they do not offer the kind of partnership approach that Grayson has developed.
“Support to second tier bus and coach manufacturers is even less well-developed, and we are aiming to fill that gap by working closely with these companies to provide the products they need and to develop bespoke systems for them where necessary. We believe that we can offer this high-end service and still provide good value for money.”
The new venture is being headed by David Wright, who has emigrated to America with his family after two years spent developing Grayson Thermal Systems’ European business.
He is responsible for forging new business relationships and establishing a stockholding operation in America, with a view to developing manufacturing facilities Stateside in the medium-term.
Grayson Thermal Systems has been owned and managed by the Hateley family throughout its 30 year history. It has a turnover in the UK of £20m, and is a major player in the UK bus aftermarket for cooling and heating products.
It has projected that sales at Grayson Thermal Systems Corp. will top $6m within 36 months, and it aims to secure seven per cent of the bus and coach market, and five per cent of the specialist vehicle market, by the end of the new business’s third year of operation.
David Wright said: “This is a highly ambitious project, but we have researched it thoroughly. There are already more than 1000 buses and coaches on America’s roads that are fitted with Grayson cooling systems, so we have already made forays into the market and our products are being proved in use.”
